The biggest centre for miles around, Pickering takes for itself the title "Gateway to the Moors", which is pushing it a bit, though it's certainly a handy place to stay if you're touring the villages and dales of the eastern moors . Its undoubted big pull, and biggest plus if you're using public transport, is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway , which provides a beautiful way of travelling up (and walking from) Newtondale . Otherwise, Moorsbus services radiate from Pickering and there are regular bus services to and from Helmsley, Scarborough, York and Leeds.
