Spreading north from the Birmingham conurbation, the miscellaneous and low-key landscapes of Staffordshire don't enthral too many people. Nonetheless, the county packs in coachloads of visitors owing to the presence of Alton Towers (tel 0870/5204060, ; closed Nov-March; GBP23, under-12s GBP19), the nation's most popular amusement park, with several million visitors annually howling and screaming on rides with names that include Nemesis and Oblivion . The white-knuckle rides take much more money than do the hoteliers in the cathedral city of Lichfield , at the southern end of Staffordshire, both the main historic attraction and the county's most agreeable town. Lichfield is easy to reach by rail and bus from Birmingham and other major cities.
