It's a commonly held view that the northern part of Kent is a scenic and cultural wasteland, a prejudice that stems partly from the fact that most visitors only glimpse the area as they race to or from the Channel ports. However, the region has its fair share of attractions, all of which are easily accessible from London. The knot of historic sites at Chatham and Rochester are followed by the seaside towns of Whitstable, Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate , once-popular resorts that now make an interesting mix of the stuffy and the purely frivolous.
