The Kent Weald is usually taken to refer to the region around the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells , but in fact it stretches across a much larger area between the North and South Downs and includes parts of both Kent and Sussex, though the majority of its attractions are in Kent. During Saxon times, much of The Weald was covered in thick forest - the word itself derives from the Germanic word wald , meaning forest, and the suffixes -hurst (meaning wood) and -den (meaning clearing) are commonly found in Wealden village names. Now, however, the region is epitomized by gentle hills, sunken country lanes and somnolent villages as well as some of England's most beautiful gardens - Sissinghurst being the best known.
