Dover , just 21 miles from the Continent (Calais' low cliffs are visible on a clear day), is the southeast's principal cross-Channel port, but as a town it is not immensely appealing, even though its key position has left it with a clutch of historic attractions. To its north lie Sandwich , once the most important of the Cinque Ports but now no longer even on the coast, and the pleasant resort towns of Deal and Walmer , each with its own set of distinctive fortifications as well as a smattering of traditional seaside B&Bs.
