The untidy landscapes of north Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire herald a transition between the satellite towns of London and the Midlands. Since the war, the character of the region has been transformed by the attempt to solve London's overcrowding. Sprawling suburbs now festoon many of the small country towns of yesteryear and, in the 1960s, Milton Keynes swallowed thirteen existing villages to become the country's largest new town. Nonetheless, there are several interesting targets. North Buckinghamshire has the wonderful Stowe Gardens , dotted with a remarkable assortment of outdoor sculptures and follies and, over in Bedfordshire, whose most distinctive feature is the wriggling River Ouse, Bedford deserves more than just a sideward glance, if for no other reason than for its links with John Bunyan.
