With the siren draws of the Lakes, the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales so close, the rest of Lancashire often gets bypassed in the rush to the surrounding national parks, and more's the pity. In Preston , 25 miles northwest of Manchester, the county has one of England's oldest towns, containing two fine museums and some appealing Georgian and Victorian remnants. North of the town, rural Lancashire is at its most bucolic in the villages of the Ribble Valley , particularly in the Forest of Bowland , whose gateway is the small market town of Clitheroe .
