Practicalities
Lancaster is a regular stop on the West Coast rail line from London to Scotland; there are also hourly trains from Manchester and even more frequently from Preston. From either the train station on Meeting House Lane, or the bus station on Cable Street in town, it's a five-minute walk to the tourist office at 29 Castle Hill (April-June & Oct Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; July-Sept Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun noon-4pm; Nov-March Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; tel 01524/32878, ), in front of the castle. Annual events and festivals include an Easter maritime festival, Georgian fair (August bank holiday), and spectacular Bonfire Night celebrations (Saturday nearest Nov 5).
