With a car you could see almost everything in a couple of days; even on foot, it only takes around five days to circumnavigate the entire island. But don't miss a trip on one of the two century-old rail services which still provide the best public transport to all the major towns and sights except for Peel. The carriages of the Steam Railway (Easter-Oct daily 10am-5pm; GBP7 return to Port Erin) rock their fifteen-mile course from Douglas to Castletown, Port St Mary and Port Erin at a spirited pace. The rolling terrain due north of Douglas was too steep for conventional trains, but by 1893 fledgling technology was available to construct the Manx Electric Railway (Easter-May, Sept & Oct daily 10am-5pm; June-Aug 10am-7.30pm; GBP6 return to Ramsey) which runs for seventeen miles from Douglas's Derby Castle Station to Ramsey via Laxey. The "Island Explorer" ticket gives one (GBP8), three (GBP18), five (GBP26) or seven (GBP32) days' unlimited travel on all bus services, plus steam and electric train routes, the trip to Snaefell and horse-tram rides in Douglas. Tickets are available from the Travel Shop or the tourist office in Douglas, or main train and tram stations.
