Getting To The Island
Ferries or the quicker Sea Cats , both run by The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (Mon-Sat 7am-8pm, Sun 9am-8pm; tel 08705/523523, ), depart from either Heysham (near Lancaster) or Liverpool to Douglas. Heysham (Sea Cat 2hr, ferry 3hr 30min) has the most frequent service, with two or three sailings a day in July and August dropping to one or two daily during the rest of the year. Liverpool manages two to three Sea Cat services a day (2hr 30min) between April and September, with a reduced ferry service (4hr) at other times (between October and March, down to 1 daily at weekends). One-way fares start at GBP19 for foot passengers and GBP99 for drivers (covers the car, driver and one passenger), but advance-purchase tickets, special offers and night-time sailings offer substantial savings. The best flight deals are with Manx Airlines (tel 08457/256256, ), which flies several times daily from Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds/Bradford. Meanwhile, British European Airways (tel 08705/676676, ) flies daily from London City Airport and from Bristol and Belfast. Prices start at GBP99 return on all routes.
