On the north bank of the river four miles east of Newcastle, WALLSEND , as the name tells you, was the last outpost of Hadrian's great border defence. Segedunum , the "strong fort" a couple of minutes' walk from the Metro station here (daily: April-Oct 10am-5pm; Nov-March 10am-3.30pm; GBP2.95), has been admirably developed as one of the prime attractions along the Wall. Besides extensive excavations, the grounds contain a fully reconstructed bathhouse, complete with steaming pools and colourful frescoes, and a rebuilt section of the Wall itself. The cleverly conceived museum combines excavated finds with interactive computer displays to give a strong flavour of life at the fort, as well as bringing the history of the site up to the present day with displays on coalmining and shipbuilding. To complete the picture, climb the 110-foot tower for a spectacular overview of the remains, the adjacent ship-repair yards and the river.
