Visiting The Wall
There's a special Hadrian's Wall bus service, the cutely tagged #AD122 , which links Hexham tourist office and bus and train stations with Chesters, Housesteads, Once Brewed Visitor Centre, Vindolanda, Cawfields, Haltwhistle train station, the Roman Army Museum and Greenhead, Birdoswald and Carlisle. This operates between late-May and late-September, four to five times a day in each direction, taking two hours for the whole route (1hr Hexham-Haltwhistle); a typical one-way ticket, from Hexham to Vindolanda, costs GBP2.10. There's also a year-round service, the #185, which runs between Carlisle and Housesteads, via the Roman Army Museum, Haltwhistle and the Once Brewed Visitor Centre, with two to three departures a day (not Sun). Another year-round service, the #685, runs hourly (Mon-Sat) along the A69 between Carlisle, Greenhead, Haltwhistle, Haydon Bridge, Hexham, Corbridge and Newcastle (Eldon Square); on Sundays, the #685 runs four times from Carlisle to Hexham, connecting with the hourly #85 Hexham-Newcastle service. Finally, the #880 or #882 bus from Hexham (calling at the train station and Acomb youth hostel) runs via Chollerford, from where Chesters is just half a mile's walk along the road to the west; during the period May to mid-September, some of these services divert to Chesters itself. The nearest train stations are on the Newcastle-Carlisle line at Corbridge, Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle. Hexham, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle will leave you a fair walk to Chesters, Vindolanda/Once Brewed and Cawfields/Greenhead respectively, or you can connect at Hexham or Haltwhistle with the bus services described above. A variety of passes are available on these services. Day Rover tickets on the #AD122, which can be bought from the driver or local tourist offices, cost GBP5.50; holders of Northeast Explorer passes get half-price travel, those with Stagecoach Cumberland Explorer tickets go free. The Hadrian's Wall Rail Rover Ticket (GBP12.50, available from train stations) is valid for two days in any three-day period (after 9am weekdays), and covers travel on the Newcastle-Carlisle train line, the #AD122 and the Tyne & Wear Metro. Not quite so good-value is the Tyne Valley Ranger (GBP11), a one-day pass for the Newcastle-Carlisle train and the #AD122 (after 9am weekdays).
