Mon-Fri & Sun 7am-7pm, Sat 8am-7pm; free; www.westminsterdiocese.org.uk; Tube: Victoria. Halfway down Victoria Street from Westminster Abbey, you'll find one of London's most surprising churches, the stripy neo-Byzantine concoction of the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral. Begun in 1895, it is one of the last and wildest monuments to the Victorian era: constructed from more than twelve million terracotta-coloured bricks and decorated with hoops of Portland stone, it culminates in a magnificent tapered campanile which rises to 274 feet, served by a lift (daily 9am-5pm; GBP2). The interior is only half finished, so to get an idea of what the place will look like when it's finally completed, explore the series of side chapels whose rich, multicoloured decor makes use of over one hundred different marbles from around the world.
