To the west of Paternoster Square along Newgate Street, you'll find the Central Criminal Court, more popularly known as the Old Bailey . Built on the site of the notoriously harsh Newgate Prison, where folk used to come to watch public hangings, the Old Bailey is now the venue for all the country's most serious criminal court cases; you can watch the proceedings from the visitors gallery (Mon-Fri 10.30am-1pm & 2-4pm), but note that bags and cameras are not allowed in, and there is no cloakroom.
