Sweeping northeast towards Bloomsbury from Piccadilly Circus, and separating Soho proper from Chinatown, the gentle curve of Shaftesbury Avenue is the heart of mainstream theatreland, with five theatres and two cinemas along its length. Like Charing Cross Road, it was conceived in the late 1870s, ostensibly to relieve traffic congestion but with the dual purpose of destroying the slums that lay in its path. Ironically, it was then named after Lord Shaftesbury, whose life had been spent trying to help the likes of those dispossessed by the road scheme.
