Tube: Covent Garden. London's oldest planned square, laid out in the 1630s by Inigo Jones, Covent Garden Piazza was initially a great success, its novelty value alone attracting a rich and aristocratic clientele. Over the next century, though, the tone of the place fell as the fruit and vegetable market expanded, and theatres and coffee houses began to take over the peripheral buildings. When the flower market closed in 1974, the piazza narrowly survived being turned into an office development. Instead, the elegant Victorian market hall and its environs were restored to house shops, restaurants and arts-and-crafts stalls. Boosted by buskers and street entertainers, the piazza has now become one of London's major tourist attractions, its success prompting a wholesale gentrification of the streets to the north of the market.
