Tube: Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road. Charing Cross Road , Soho's eastern border and a thoroughfare from Trafalgar Square to Oxford Street, boasts the highest concentration of bookshops anywhere in London. One of the first to open here was the chaotic, antiquated Foyles at no. 119, which now struggles to compete with the nearby heavyweight chain bookshops such as Books Etc, Borders, Blackwell's and Waterstones. The street retains more of its original character south of Cambridge Circus, where you'll find the capital's main feminist bookshop, Silver Moon, along with a cluster of ramshackle second-hand bookshops, such as Quinto. One of the nicest places for secondhand book browsing is Cecil Court , the southernmost alleyway between Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane. This short, paved street boasts specialist bookshops devoted to dance, Italy, new age philosophies and the like, plus various antiquarian dealers. Another place you shouldn't miss, just off Charing Cross Road, is the Photographers' Gallery (Mon-Sat 11am-6pm, Sun noon-6pm; free; www.photonet.org.uk) at 5 and 8 Great Newport St, which hosts free temporary exhibitions that are invariably worth a browse.
