East End Sunday Markets
Most visitors to the East End come here for the Sunday markets . Approaching from Liverpool Street, the first one you come to is Petticoat Lane (Sun 9am-2pm; Tube: Liverpool Street or Aldgate East), not one of London's prettiest streets, but one of its longest-running Sunday markets, specializing in cheap (and often pretty tacky) clothing. The authorities renamed the street Middlesex Street in 1830 to avoid the mention of ladies' underwear, but the original name has stuck. To the north lies Spitalfields Market (organic market Fri & Sun 10am-5pm; general market Mon-Fri 11am-3pm & Sun 10am-5pm; Tube: Liverpool Street), once the capital's premier wholesale fruit and vegetable market, now specializing in organic food, plus clothes, crafts and jewellery. Further east lies Brick Lane (Sun 8am-1pm; Tube: Aldgate East, Shoreditch or Liverpool Street), heart of the Bengali community, famous for its bric-a-brac Sunday market, wonderful curry houses and non-stop bagel bakery, and now also something of a magnet for young designers. From Brick Lane's northernmost end, it's a short walk to Columbia Road (Sun 8am-1pm; bus #26 from Aldwych or Liverpool Street tube), the city's best market for flowers and plants.
