Winchester Practicalities

Practicalities

Winchester train station is about a mile northwest of the cathedral on Stockbridge Road. If you arrive by bus , you'll find yourself on the Broadway, conveniently opposite the tourist office in the imposing Guildhall (June-Sept Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-2pm; Oct-May Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01962/840500, ). If you're loooking for accommodation with atmosphere, try the Wykeham Arms , 75 Kingsgate St (tel 01962/853834; GBP70-90), a fine old hostelry where the art of classy inn-keeping has not yet vanished. Nearly as central but not so expensive, Portland House , 63 Tower St (tel 01962/865195, tony@knightworld.com ; GBP50-60) is a Georgian house in a quiet mews between the cathedral and train station. Dellbrook , Hubert Road (tel 01962/865093; GBP40-50) lies a mile south of the city centre, near the watermeadows. Winchester has an exceptionally well-sited youth hostel in the eighteenth-century City Mill, 1 Water Lane (tel 01962/853723).

The city's best pub is the Wykeham Arms , 75 Kingsgate St, a maze of characterful, intimate spaces where you can dine on snacks or gourmet-standard food. The picturesque Eclipse Inn on the Square, in front

of the cathedral, specializes in pies and casseroles, while Nine The Square , opposite, is a restaurant and wine bar where you can have light meals. The Old Monk on Bridge Street has deep comfy sofas and a riverside terrace, while the Courtyard Cafe in the Guildhall, Broadway, has outdoor eating, and more substantial lunches in the indoor bistro. Noah's on Jewry Street serves inexpensive dishes with Thai, Caribbean and Mediterranean influences.
