The main pleasures of inland Dorset come from unscheduled meandering through its ancient landscapes and tiny rural settlements, many of which boast preposterously winsome names such as Ryme Intrinseca, Piddletrenthide, Up Sydling and Plush. The rumbustious chalk-carved giant outside the village of Cerne Abbas is the county's most photographed site, but the major tourist honeypots are the towns of Blandford Forum, Shaftesbury and Sherborne , the landscaped garden at Stourhead across the county boundary in Wiltshire, and the brasher stately home at Longleat , an unlikely hybrid of safari park and historic monument.
