Without coal, eastern Nottinghamshire escaped the heavy-duty industrialization that fell upon its county neighbours in the late nineteenth century. It remains a largely rural area, its undulating farmland, punctuated by dozens of pint-sized villages, rolling seamlessly over to the River Trent, the boundary with Lincolnshire. By and large, it's a prosperous part of the county and by no means unpleasant, but for the casual visitor the attractions are distinctly low-key, being essentially confined to Southwell and Newark , both of which are easy to reach by public transport from Nottingham.
