The slice of easy countryside that comprises west Northamptonshire falls to the west of the A508 and is dotted with stately homes, amongst which the most diverting are Althorp , the last resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Sulgrave Manor , which has family links with the USA's own George Washington. East Northamptonshire - on the other side of the A508 - is dissected by the River Nene, which wriggles its way through a string of little villages and towns, amongst which Oundle and Fotheringhay are the most diverting.
