The rolling hills and gentle valleys of the Lincolnshire Wolds , a narrow band of chalky land running southeast from Caistor to just outside Skegness, stand out amidst the more mundane agricultural landscapes of north Lincolnshire. A string of particularly appealing valleys is concentrated in the vicinity of Louth , which, with its striking church and old centre, is easily the most enticing of the region's towns - with the added advantage of being fairly close to the coast. A few miles to the south of Louth, the Wolds dip down to the fens, pancake-flat and making a wide and deep arch around the intrusive stump of The Wash. In the other direction, east of the Wolds, lies the coast, whose bungalows, campsites and caravans are parked beside a sandy beach that extends, with a few marshy interruptions, north from Skegness , the main resort, to Mablethorpe and ultimately Cleethorpes. Near Skegness, the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve is a welcome diversion from the bucket-and-spade/amusement-arcade commercialism.
