Heading northwest from Dedham, the B1029 dips beneath the A12 to reach the byroad to Higham, an unremarkable hamlet where you pick up the road to STOKE-BY-NAYLAND , four miles to the west. This is the most picturesque of villages, where a knot of half-timbered, pastel-painted cottages snuggle up to St Mary's Church . With its pretty brick and stone-trimmed tower, the church was one of Constable's favourite subjects. The doors of the south porch are sumptuously covered by the carved figures of a medieval Jesse Tree. The village also boasts a great old pub , the Angel Inn (tel 01206/263245; GBP60-70), known for its adventurous food (eat in the bar or book for the restaurant) and cosy rooms . There are several other good places to stay in and near the village, including Thorington Hall (tel 01206/337329; GBP40-50), which offers four bedrooms in a seventeenth-century house. Southwest from here, it's two miles back to the River Stour at NAYLAND , a workaday little place that is chiefly remarkable for its church's altar painting, Christ Blessing the Bread and Wine . It's one of only two attempts by Constable at a religious theme - and, dated to 1809, it was completed long before he found his artistic rhythm. While you're here, you can wet your whistle and sample quality bar food at the venerable White Hart , 11 High St. Local accommodation is available at Hill House , Gravel Hill (tel 01206/262782, heigham.hillhouse@rdplus.net ; GBP40-50) on the edge of the village and at Gladwin's Farm , Harper's Hill (tel 01206/262261, ; GBP60-70), a secluded timber-framed farmhouse with its own indoor pool.
