From Exeter the A377 runs alongside the scenic Tarka Line railway to North Devon 's major town, Barnstaple . Within easy reach of here, the resorts of Ilfracombe and Woolacombe draw the crowds, though the fine sandy beaches surrounding the latter give ample opportunity to find your own space. The river port of Bideford gives its name to a long bay that holds another beach resort, Westward Ho! , as well as the precipitous village of Clovelly , perhaps Devon's most famous beauty spot. The coastal path follows the bay westwards, particularly inspiring around the stormy Hartland Point . Away from the coast, there is plenty of scope for walking and cycling along the Tarka Trail long-distance path, passing through some of the region's loveliest countryside, while for a complete break, the tiny island of Lundy offers almost complete isolation and a cleansing air.
