EXMOUTH started as a Roman port and went on to become the first of Devon's resorts to be popularized by holiday-makers in the late eighteenth century. Overlooking lawns, rock pools and a respectable two miles of beach, Exmouth's Georgian terraces once accommodated such folk as the wives of Nelson and Byron - installed at no. 6 and no. 19 The Beacon respectively (on a rise overlooking the seafront, above the public gardens). The resort has a good choice of accommodation options, including, the Manor Hotel , The Beacon (tel 01395/274477; GBP50-60), where you can enjoy wonderful panoramic views from the rooms. From April to October, Exmouth is linked by ferry to Starcross, on the other side of the Exe estuary (hourly service; GBP2.50 single fare), where you can pick up a bus to Torbay. Four miles east of Exmouth, bounded on each side by sandstone cliffs, BUDLEIGH SALTERTON continues the genteel theme - its thatched and whitewashed cottages attracted such figures as Noel Coward and P.G. Wodehouse, and John Millais painted his famous Boyhood of Raleigh on the shingle beach here. (Sir Walter Raleigh was born in the pretty East Budleigh, a couple of miles inland.) Three miles east, Ladram Bay is a popular pebbly beach sheltered by woods and beautiful eroded cliffs. If you want to stay in the area, contact the tourist office on Fore Street (Easter-June, Sept & Oct Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; July & Aug Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 11am-5pm; Nov-Easter Mon-Thurs & Sat 10am-1pm, Fri 10am-3pm; tel 01395/445275).
