Though generally harsher than the county's southern seaboard, the north Cornish coast is punctuated by some of the finest beaches in England, the most popular of which are to be found around Newquay , the surfers' capital. Other major holiday centres are around the Camel estuary, where the port of Padstow makes a good base for some remarkable beaches. North of the Camel, the coast is an almost unbroken line of cliffs as far as the Devon border, the gaunt, exposed terrain making a melodramatic setting for Tintagel , though the wide strand at Bude attracts legions of surfers and family holiday-makers. The more westerly stretches of this coast are littered with the derelict stacks and castle-like ruins of the engine-houses that once powered the region's copper and tin mines , industries that at one time led the world.
Best of the B&Bs on St Agnes is the Coastguards , one of a smart row of cottages past the Old Lighthouse and post office on the island's western side (tel 01720/422373; GBP50-60; closed Nov-March). Others include Covean Cottage , above Porth Conger (tel 01720/422620; GBP50-60) and the Parsonage (tel 01720/422370; GBP50-60), nestled below the lighthouse. Just above the jetty at Porth Conger, the Turk's Head serves beer and superb pasties.
