Visitors to the southernmost inhabited island of the Scillies, ST AGNES , disembark at Porth Conger , from where a road leads to the western side of the island, on the way passing the disused Old Lighthouse , one of the oldest in the country - dating from 1680. From here the right-hand fork leads to Periglis Cove , a mooring for boats on the western side of the island, and the left-hand fork goes to St Warna's Cove , where the patron saint of shipwrecks is reputed to have landed from Ireland, the exact spot being marked by a holy well. Between the two coves the coastal path passes the miniature Troy Town Maze , thought to have been created a couple of centuries ago, but possibly much older. Beyond St Warna's Cove, cross Wingletang Down to the southern headland of Horse Point , where there are some tortuous wind-eroded rocks. Beady Pool , an inlet on the eastern side of the headland, gained its name from the trove of beads
washed ashore from the wreck of a seventeenth-century Dutch trader; some of the reddish-brown stones still occasionally turn up. The eastern side of St Agnes has one of the best beaches, the small, sheltered Covean , and at low tide you can cross a sand bar to reach the islet of Gugh , where there's a scattering of untended Bronze Age remains. St Agnes's western side looks out onto the Western Rocks , a horseshoe of bird-populated islets that can be explored on boat tours.
