Several attractions lie close to town, the nearest being Brougham Castle (April-Sept daily 10am-6pm; Oct daily 10am-5pm; GBP2.10; EH), a mile and a half south of Penrith by the River Eamont. Slightly further out, three miles southwest of town, reached from either the A66 or A592, is Dalemain (Easter-Sept Mon-Thurs & Sun 10.30am-5pm; GBP5; gardens only GBP3; ), a country house set in ample grounds. This started life in the twelfth century as a fortified tower, but has subsequently been added to by every generation, culminating with a Georgian facade grafted onto a largely Elizabethan house. However, top local attraction is undoubtedly Rheged (daily 10am-5.30pm; ; free) at Redhills on the A66, a couple of minutes' drive from the M6 (junction 40); bus #X4/X5 between Penrith and Keswick stops outside. Billed as Britain's largest earth-covered building, it takes its name from the ancient kingdom of Cumbria and features a spectacular atrium-lit underground visitor centre which fills you in on the region's culture and history by way of exhibitions, local art and craft displays and family activities. There's also a giant-format cinema screen showing Rheged: The Movie , documenting a Cumbrian journey through time (GBP4.95); as well as the separate National Mountaineering Exhibition (same times; GBP4.50, joint ticket with movie GBP7.80; ), presenting an entertaining history of mountain-climbers and climbing, from the Lake District to Everest.
