A minor road off the Hawkshead-Coniston B5285 winds the couple of miles northwest to the highly popular Tarn Hows , a body of water surrounded by spruce and pine and circled by paths and picnic spots. The land was donated by Beatrix Potter in 1930, since when the National Trust has carefully maintained it. It takes an hour to walk around the tarn, during which you can ponder on the fact that this miniature idyll is in fact almost entirely artificial - the original owners enlarged two small tarns to make the one you see today, planted and landscaped the surroundings and dug the footpaths. A free National Trust Tarn Hows bus service runs between Hawkshead and Coniston on Sundays between Easter and the end of October, linking with the regular #505/506. Otherwise, you'll have to walk the two miles up from Coniston or Hawkshead on country paths and lanes.
