It's two miles from Hawkshead, down the eastern side of Esthwaite Water on the B5285 to the pretty twin hamlets of Near and Far Sawrey, the first the site of Beatrix Potter's beloved Hill Top (Easter-Oct Mon-Wed, Sat & Sun 11am-5pm; GBP4; NT). A Londoner by birth, Potter bought the farmhouse here with the proceeds from her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit , and retained it as her study long after she moved out following her marriage in 1913. Its furnishings and contents have been kept as they were during her occupancy - a condition of Potter's will - and the small house is always busy with visitors; so much so that numbers are often limited. In summer, expect to have to wait in line. From April to October, you can travel to Hill Top directly from Bowness (10am-4.30pm every 40min; tel 015394/45161, ) on a combined "boat-and-goat" ferry-and-minibus service, which runs on from Hill Top to Hawkshead and back.
