In good weather, the minor road to Seathwaite is lined with parked cars by 9am as hikers take to the paths for the rugged climbs up the three major peaks of Scafell, Scafell Pike and Great Gable. The summit of Scafell Pike (3205ft), the highest point in England, is close to the second highest point in the Lakes, Scafell (3163ft), and an eight-mile, six-hour, loop walk taking in both leaves Seathwaite via Stockley Bridge to the south, branching up Styhead Ghyll to Styhead Tarn . This is as far as many get, and on those all-too-rare glorious summer days the tarn is a fine place for a picnic. A direct, but very steep approach to Great Gable (2949ft) is also possible from Styhead Tarn, though most people cut west at Seathwaite campsite up Sourmilk Ghyll and approach via Green Gable (2628ft), also an eight-mile, six-hour return walk.
