Carlisle Practicalities

Practicalities

From the train station , just off Botchergate, it's a five-minute walk to the tourist office in the Old Town Hall on Green Market (July & Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-6pm, Sun 10.30am-4pm; June & Sept Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm, Sun 10.30am-4pm; March-May & Oct Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm; Nov-Feb Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; tel 01228/625600, ). The bus station is off Lowther Street, parallel to English Street, and most of the budget accommodation is east of here, concentrated on the streets between Victoria Place and Warwick Road. Most B&Bs are less than ten minutes' walk from the centre. Good choices - all of them Victorian town houses in a conservation area, include: Ashleigh House , 46 Victoria Place (tel 01228/521631; GBP50-60); Courtfield House , 169 Warwick Rd (tel 01228/522767; no credit cards; GBP40-50); and Howard House , 27 Howard Place (tel 01228/529159; no credit cards; GBP40-50). Best of the central hotels is the Lakes Court Hotel , Court Square (tel 01228/531951, ; GBP90-110, GBP70-90 at weekends and winter), right by the train station. A summer-only youth hostel occupies the university's Old Brewery Residences, Bridge Lane, Caldewgate (tel 01228/597352; July & Aug only), just west of the town centre. The nearest campsite is Orton Grange caravan park (tel 01228/710252) on the Wigton road (A595) four miles southwest of the city - take bus #300.

For daytime meals head for Cafe Courtyard , Treasury Court (enter through the gates on Scotch Street or Fisher Street). Near

the station Cafe Solo , 1 Botchergate, is a funky little stop for grilled panini, omlettes and coffees. Otherwise, do your dining along Warwick Road, where in the space of 300 yards you can choose from Casa Romana (Italian), David's (Modern British; eve only, closed Sun & Mon), Alexandros (Greek; closed all Sun, plus Mon lunch) and the Emperor's Palace (Chinese). The only decent pub in the centre is the Howard Arms , 107 Lowther St.
