The Mendip Hills , rising to the north of Wells, are chiefly famous for Wookey Hole - the most impressive of many caves in this narrow limestone chain - and for the Cheddar Gorge , where a walk through the narrow cleft might make a starting point for more adventurous trips across the Mendips. From Monday to Saturday there's an hourly bus to Wookey Hole from Wells (#172), from where there's also an hourly bus to the gorge (#126 or #826) - every two hours on Sunday.
