Twelve miles southwest of Cirencester, Westonbirt Arboretum (daily 10am-8pm or sunset; GBP4.25; ) claims one of the largest collections of temperate trees and shrubs in the world: the maple trees, which set the place ablaze in autumn, and the blankets of bluebells and anemones in spring draw the biggest crowds. Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias provide other great splashes of colour. Numerous paths crisscross the six-hundred-acre garden: an average circular walk takes about an hour and a half, but you can easily stroll about for much longer than that. The arboretum flanks the A433, just west of Westonbirt village and three miles southwest of Tetbury, a handsome but untouristy Cotswold town. (Keen royalists should keep an eye open for the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne, who live nearby, at Highgrove and Gatcombe Park respectively.)
