The B4066 cuts a glorious route along the valley ridge southwest of Stroud, passing through ULEY , six miles from town. Boasting one of the best settings in the region, the village church lords it over the small green and the Old Crowne pub, where the local brews include one called Pigor Mortis. Uley Bury , among the largest hill forts in Britain, extends along the ridge above the village. The path from the church takes you up the shortest and steepest route, though motorists can opt to drive up to the car park right by the fort. Fences prevent you from clambering on top of the bury, but you can walk around the edge - a distance of about two miles altogether - and take in some staggering views. The atmosphere peaks on a winter's day, when bracing winds blow across the ridge while mist gathers in the valley below.
