Travelling west through the Somerset Levels, your route could take you through both Bridgwater and Taunton , each of which would make a handy starting point for excursions into the gently undulating Quantock Hills , a mellow landscape of snug villages set in scenic wooded valleys or "combes". Public transport is fairly minimal round here, but you can see quite a lot on the West Somerset Railway between Bishops Lydeard and the coastal resort of Minehead, with stops at some of the thatched, typically English villages along the west flank of the Quantocks. The restored line was built originally to serve the harbour of Watchet, and is now mainly used by tourists, birdwatchers and trekkers.
