For a quick sample of the lovely countryside around Bath you could make an easy excursion to CLAVERTON , on the eastern edge of Bath, where the American Museum (late March to July & Sept-Nov Tues-Sun 2-5pm; Aug daily 2-5pm; grounds Tues-Fri 1-6pm, Sat & Sun noon-6pm; GBP5.50; grounds only GBP3) merits at least half a day. Occupying the early nineteenth-century Claverton Manor, where Winston Churchill made his maiden political speech in 1897, this consists of a series of reconstructed rooms illustrating life in the New World from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, as well as special sections devoted to textiles, whaling, the opening of the West, Native Americans and Hispano-American culture. The glorious grounds contain a replica of George Washington's garden, an arboretum and assorted relics resembling items from a movie set. University buses #18 and #418 run throughout the year to the Avenue (the stop before the campus), from where it's a ten-minute walk to the museum.
