Practicalities
The combined bus and train station is on Skt. Laurentii Vej, and plays host to the tourist office (mid-June to early-Aug Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 10am-4pm; rest of year reduced hours; tel 98.44.13.77, www.skagen-tourist.dk ); check here for details of the summer sleep-in, whose location is liable to change. Otherwise, for its artistic associations Brøndum's Hotel , Anchervej 3 (tel 98.44.15.55, www.broendumshotel.dk ; GBP35-40/$56-64/?63-72), is by far the most atmospheric spot to stay - book well ahead in summer. A little cheaper is Skagen Sømandshjem , Ostre Strandvej 2 (tel 98.44.25.88, www.skaw.dk/soemandshjem ; GBP25-30/$40-48/?45-54), which also serves up bargain meals. Or try Den Gamle Skibssmedie , Vestre Standvej 28 (tel 98.44.67.16; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45); or Clausens Hotel , Skt. Laurentii Vej 35 (tel 98.45.01.66, www.clausenshotel.dk ; GBP30-35/$48-56/?54-63). There are two youth hostels : one at Rolighedsvej 2 (tel 98.44.22.00, www.danhostelnord.dk/skagen ; GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18) and one at Højensvej 32 in Gammel Skagen (tel 98.44.13.56, www.skaw.dk/hostel ; GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18; late March to late Oct; bus #79 to Frederikshaven), 3km west of Skagen. Of a number of campsites , the most accessible are Grenen (tel 98.44.25.46, www.grenencamping.dk ; May to early Sept), to the north along Fyrvej, which has cabins, and Poul Eeg's (tel 98.44.14.70; mid-May to early Sept), on Batterivej, left off Oddenvej just before the town centre.
