Arhus Eating, Drinking and Nightlife

Eating, Drinking and Nightlife

If cash is tight, or you're stocking up for a picnic, use the Special Smørrebrød outlet at Nybanegardsgade 53, or the late-opening supermarket (8am-midnight) at the train station. Cruising the old-town cafes and restaurants will turn up plenty of lunchtime specials for around 55kr; for instance the theatrical Pind's Cafe at Skolegade 11, which often looks shut but does excellent smørrebrød . For something quick and inexpensive try the tasty burgers at Karls on Klostergade or the bagel burgers at Rhodes on Frederiks Alle. At Dragen , Aboulevarden 64 , you can, for 99kr, choose your ingredients from the wok buffet and have them stir-fried in front of you. Italia , at Aboulevarden 9, is good value, as are the highly rated vegetarian meals at Kulturgyngen , Fronthuset Mejlgade 53. On Aboulevarden, along the northern bank of a newly uncovered section of the Arhus River (previously covered by pavement), a string of trendy eating and drinking venues have recently popped up; try Cross Cafe for their generous brunch platters at 67kr or their over-sized salmon sandwiches. If you can afford a bit more, try visiting the beautiful Marselisborg Havn harbour, which has a number of pricey restaurants including the superb Seafood . For superb Danish pastry, Emmerys , the city's oldest patisserie in Guldsmedegade 24-26 is worth a visit; the bakery is organic and the cakes to die for.

Arhus, along with Aalborg further north, is the only place in Denmark with a nightlife to match that of Copenhagen. The city has particularly wonderful bars , many situated in the streets close to the cathedral, including the movie-themed Casablanca at Rosensgade 12, the pricey Carlton nearby at no. 23, and Englen and Kindrødt both on Studsgade. Around the corner, Masken on Store Torv is also a worthwhile stop with impressive masks from around the globe decorating the walls. The cream

of Danish and international rock acts can be found at Voxhall , Vester Alle 15, with its restaurant and cinema, and Train , Toldbogade 6, with a slightly older clientele; Fatter Eskil , Skolegade 25, and Kulturgyngen , Fronthuset, Mejlgade 53, have more run-of-the-mill blues bands. New Clear , Klostergade 34, currently hosts the hottest club scene , while the leading jazz venue is the smoky, atmospheric Bent J , at Nørre Alle 66.
