Arrival and Accommodation
Trains , buses and ferries all stop on the southern edge of the city centre, a short walk from the tourist office in Park Alle (May to mid-June Mon-Fri 9.30am-5pm, Sat 10am-1pm; mid-June to mid-Sept Mon-Fri 9.30am-6pm, Sat 9.30am-5pm, Sun 9.30am-1pm; mid-Sept to April Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm, Sat 10am-1pm; tel 89.40.67.00, www.visitaarhus.dk ), on the first floor of the city's Radhus. Airport buses from Tirstrup connect regularly with the train station (50min; 60kr). Buses form the city's public transport system, which is divided into four zones: zones one and two cover the centre; zones three and four reach into the country; a basic ticket costs 13kr from machines on board and is valid for any number of journeys for two hours from the time stamped on it. However, getting around is best done on foot: Arhus has a compact centre and you'll seldom need to use the buses unless you're venturing out to the beaches or woods on the outskirts. An Arhus Pass (88kr for a 24-hour pass, 110kr for 48 hours, 155kr for a week) covers unlimited bus travel and entrance to most museums and sightseeing tours (though you must book these at the tourist office first). The tourist office can arrange accommodation in private rooms for 150kr a night plus a 25kr booking fee. The Arhus youth hostel , 4km from the centre at Marienlundsvej 10 (tel 86.16.72.98, www.hostel-aarhus.dk ; GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18; bus #1, #6, #8, #9, #16, #56 or #58), is beautifully situated in the middle of Risskov wood and close to Den Permanente beach, to which locals flock in summer. The Arhus City Sleep-In , Havnegade 20 (tel 86.19.20.55, www.citysleep-in.dk ; GBP5-10/$8-16/?9-18), is more central and has an impressive range of facilities for travellers. There are just three reasonably priced central hotels : Hotel Guldsmeden at Guldsmedegade 40 (tel 86.13.45.56; GBP25-30/$40-48/?45-54), Get In , Jens Baggesensvej 43 (tel 86.10.86.14; GBP10-15/$16-24/?18-27) and the new Hotel Cab Inn Arhus , Kannikegade 14 (tel 70.21.62.00, www.cab-inn.dk; GBP20-25/$32-40/?36-45). Of a number of campsites , the two most useful are Blommehaven ( www.blommehaven.dk ; April to early Sept; bus #6 or #19), overlooking the bay 3km south of the city centre, and Arhus Nord ( www.dk-camping.dk/aarhusnord) , 8km north, open year round - take bus #117 or #118 from the bus station; both have cabins.
