"A city within the city" is how Frederiksbergers like to describe their independent district. Positioned between the districts of Vesterbro and Nørrebro, it covers a large area - almost twice the size of Indre By - and with its own industry, shopping streets and city hall, tries to be completely self-contained. Away from the main roads you'll find street after street of the district's distinctively grand villas , quite unlike the apartment blocks characteristic of residential areas in other parts of the city. The first one was erected in 1846, and between them they represent the work of some of Denmark's most distinguished architects, from Functionalists to Neoclassicists.
