Bus #1, #2, #6, #8, #28, #29, #550S, #650S, Vesterport S-Tog or Central Station. Just opposite the main entrance to Tivoli is the small square of Axeltorv , complete with tacky fake classical statues and surrounded by a wealth of entertainment complexes, fast-food joints, bowling alleys and games arcades, among them the Scala shopping-and-cinema complex and the Axelborg entertainment centre. At one end of the square is the unmistakable Palads Cinema - a large and garishly painted building resembling a huge Battenberg cake, resplendent in a variety of pink and orange pastel shades. Built in 1917 to replace the old central station, Palads acquired its distinctive decor in 1987, when artist Poul Gernes was brought in to redesign the exterior: the decoration survived the predictable storm of criticism and is now a Copenhagen landmark. By far the most interesting building on Axeltorv is Cirkus , a circular, domed, pseudo-Roman auditorium with seating for 2000 people. Built in 1905, it was used as a proper circus until the 1960s, since when it's hosted everything from boxing matches to a talk by the Dalai Lama. The splendid auditorium has fanatastic acoustics and, despite its size, is surprisingly intimate; the striking painted frescoes of circus scenes which run round the interior frieze are originals from 1905.
