Denmark has a surprising number of excellent beaches, including several within easy reach of Copenhagen's city centre. The water year round is generally pretty cold, although it can get as high as 20ºC in summer. The most popular beaches are Bellevue and Charlottenlund to the north of the city, and Ishøj and Amager to the south. The most popular beaches operate a flag system on busy days: red means danger and no swimming; yellow: bathe with caution; green: bathe freely. Toplessness is tolerated pretty much everywhere; if you want to swim in the nude, find a very quiet spot or go to the designated nudist bathing spot at Helgoland bathing pier.
