Bus #31, #36 or #71E. One of Amager's big draws, the enormous Kalvebod Faelled nature reserve on the island's western side, is remarkable for its proximity to the city - no other European capital has a reserve of this size so close to its centre. Reclaimed from the sea during World War II in an effort to create work for unemployed Danes who might otherwise have been deported to Germany, it's now home to an amazing number of predatory birds, including kestrels, blue hawks and buzzards. Up until recently, the reserve was a military firing range, and as large areas are still being cleared for potentially explosive debris, it's strongly recommended that you stick to the marked paths. The Naturcenter Vestamager , at the fringe of the reserve, offers free bike rental (call 36 13 14 15 if you want to book in advance - a good idea during school holidays) and free camping for one night in a designated campsite.
