Amager

Just southeast of Copenhagen's city centre, and connected to it by a series of lifting bridges, is the large island of Amager (pronounced Ama ). Although within walking distance of the city, the area feels quite separate, and the locals - the so-called "Ama'rkaner" - have a reputation for being rougher and tougher than their "mainland" counterparts.

Even so, recent developments have linked Amager more closely with the city, and the atmosphere of the island is gradually beginning to change. In particular, the brand new Oresund Bridge , connecting Copenhagen via Kastrup airport on Amager to Malmo in Sweden, has turned the island upside-down, and connecting trains and a new metro network - due for completion in 2004 - mean that most corners of Amager are now (or will shortly become) accessible by fast public transport. In addition, the Orestad area, south of the motorway on the way to the airport, is being rapidly developed and is expected to house some 70,000 people in the future, as well as (possibly) the city's major new concert hall, though for the time being most of the area is still ploughed field.

The island's main attraction is

the string of excellent beaches along its eastern coastline (bus #12 or #13; ask for Helgoland). Far less pretentious than those to the north of the city, they're mostly family oriented, with large sections of pebble, though there are patches of sand here and there. During summer weekends, music lovers in their thousands are drawn to the section of the beach called Femøren (named after the five-øre coin) for inexpensive open-air rock concerts - check with Use It for what's on.
