Copenhagen's suburbs are relatively characterless, though there are a few attractions dotted about here and there, along with a number of surprisingly good beaches and refreshing tracts of open park and woodland within easy reach of the city centre. To the north of the city are the determinedly populist attractions of the Danish Aquarium and the brash Bakken amusement park, along with the idyllic Frilands Museum and the curious Grundtvigs Kirke , commemorating one of the nation's most celebrated priests and scholars. South of the city you'll find the large island of Amager , with its pleasing mixture of beaches, parkland and nature reserve, and the controversial Arken museum of modern art. All the places listed here are fairly easily reached by public transport from central Copenhagen.
