Tues-Sun noon-4pm; 20kr. Walking from Christiansborg Slotsplads past the main entrance to the Folketing brings you to the Royal Arsenal Museum (Tøjhusmuseet), housed in the old Tøjhus. Completed in 1604, the Tøjhus (Arms House) was originally an armoury created to supply Christian IV's large navy with cannons, guns, ammunition and gunpowder, while the adjacent Proviantgarden (Victuallers' Building) provided clothes, food and drink. Eighty years later, the royal naval base moved to Nyholm on Christianshavn and the Tøjhus and Proviantgarden fell into disuse (the latter now houses parliamentary offices and isn't open to the public). The museum's collection of military paraphernalia is a treasure trove for arms buffs. Downstairs, the Cannon Hall contains more than 500 historic guns, mortars, artillery and tanks - the oldest guns, from the fifteenth century, are to the left of the entrance; it's reputedly the world's finest collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century armaments. The atmospheric hall itself is equally impressive - at 163 metres it's the longest arched room in Europe. Upstairs, in the Armoury Hall , an endless collection of firearms is displayed in order of technological advance. The glorification of weaponry can be a bit overwhelming to the innocent pacifist (most of the visitors seem to be wide-eyed young army cadets), though the well-informed custodians will do their best to help you appreciate the military significance of the items on display.
