Head through the main entrance onto Christiansborg Slotsplads and walk left around the outside of the building to reach Christiansborgs Slotskirke (Palace Chapel; Sun noon-4pm and daily noon-4pm during Easter and from July 16 to the third week of Oct; free), all that remains of the second Christiansborg, which burnt down in 1884. Consecrated in 1826, the chapel - designed by C.F. Hansen, one of the most important Danish Golden-Age architects - is a beautiful example of the simple Neoclassical architecture typical of the period. Ironically, having escaped the fire of 1884, the chapel went up in flames in 1992, when a flare landed on its roof during Copenhagen's Lent carnival and the inside was burnt out. It has since been returned to its original state, with Thorvaldsen's magnificent angel frieze encircling the dome and Bissen's four angel reliefs hanging from the walls beneath. Regular services are no longer held here, and the chapel is today mainly used by the Royal Danish Music Conservatory for organ lessons. Concerts are sometimes held here (check with the tourist office).
