In 1907, during the digging of the extraordinarily deep foundations necessary for Christiansborg's soaring new spire, the foundations from previous castles - Absalon's castle and Københavns Slot - were discovered. Prior to this, nobody had known what Absalon's castle had looked like - or indeed whether it was only a myth - so massive efforts went into excavating the ruins. The entrance is actually inside Christiansborg's main entrance, from where a staircase leads down to the ruins. These comprise two massive rooms, connected by archways, that follow the circumference of Absalon's castle. Signs indicate which bits of the stone and brick wall are from Absalon's castle and which from Københavns Slot, and though there's not actually much to see, it's all surprisingly absorbing, the mood enhanced by the semi-darkness and the lack of external noise. Also on display in a room adjacent to the ruins are the astonishingly intricate pieces of carved granite and sandstone discovered during excavations - it's thought they formed part of Absalon's chapel and were dumped here by the Hanseatic fleet while the castle was being dismantled in 1369. In the same room are sketches and paintings of the various castles and palaces that have existed on the site since Absalon's time - most interesting are the drawings illustrating the confused development of Københavns Slot, with it's mishmash of building styles
